Most English-speakers seem to think that Kennedy made some kind of blooper, but as far as I can see he did not. I can say "I am Australian" or I can say "I am an Australian". Kennedy chose the better phrase as he was drawing a parallel to the ancient "Civis Romanus sum" - "I am A Roman citizen" bzw a citizen of the world.
